What VAT rate does it use?

It uses the standard UAE VAT rate of 5%, and can either add 5% to a net amount or extract the 5% already included in a total.

Is this a substitute for FTA guidance?

No. It is an informational calculator and not a substitute for FTA-issued guidance. Note that Xrero is not currently on the FTA accredited e-invoicing list.
